AIP Seeks Applicants for Science Policy Fellowships
The American Institute of Physics is accepting applications for fellowship programs that will place scientists with the State Department and Congress for a one year term starting in fall 2021.

State Department Fellowship

If you are a scientist interested in the intersection of science, policy, and international affairs, the American Institute of Physics encourages you to apply for the 2021–2022 AIP State Department Fellowship Program.

This one-year fellowship is a unique opportunity for a scientist to contribute technical expertise to the department and raise awareness of the value of scientific input. In turn, scientists broaden their experience by interacting with policymakers in the federal government and learning about the foreign policy process.

Past fellows have been placed in a wide variety of roles across the department, including in offices focused on weapons nonproliferation, export controls, science diplomacy, climate change, and water conservation.

Applications are due Oct. 15.

Congressional Fellowship

AIP is also accepting applications for the 2021–2022 AIP Congressional Fellowship Program.

AIP sponsors two scientists annually to spend a year providing analytical expertise and scientific advice as congressional staff. Fellows gain a perspective on the legislative process that can enhance not only their own careers but also the physics community’s ability to communicate more effectively with Congress.

Fellows can work for a congressional committee or the personal office of a senator or representative.

Applications are due Dec. 15.

Additional Information

Current fellows in the programs are working virtually, and logistics for the 2021–2022 term are still to be determined. The fellowships include an $80,000 annualized stipend, health insurance reimbursement, and a professional development allotment.

Individuals at any stage of their career are encouraged to apply. Among other qualifications, applicants must possess the following:

Membership in one or more of AIP’s Member Societies at the time of application;
A Ph.D. in physics or a field closely related to the physical sciences, which must be completed before the start of the fellowship;
U.S. citizenship (State Department Fellowship only); and
Eligibility for a security clearance (State Department Fellowship only).

For complete information on AIP’s fellowship program qualifications and application instructions, please visit our website. All application components, which include a letter of intent, resume, and three recommendation letters, must be submitted by the deadline. Final interviews will take place in early 2021, and the 12-month fellowship term will begin in the fall of 2021.
