UFL – Biological Scientist I Position Open

Schuerger’s 1000 sq ft lab is outfitted with LED lighting systems, and all required equipment for the research described below:

Job activities for the BS1 lab assistant will include (but are not limited to):

(1) Setting up experimental equipment 

(2) Preparation of research consumables (e.g., media, reagents, sterilizing tools, cleaning glassware, etc.) 

(3) Monitoring ongoing experiments 

(4) Collecting publication-quality data 

(5) Plotting summarized data 

(6) Analyzing data (when applicable) 

(7) Maintaining accurate laboratory record

(8) Assist in the preparation of manuscripts. 

Mentor: Dr. Andrew C. Schuerger, Mars astrobiologist and plant pathologist.
Interactions with Dr. Schuerger will be on a daily basis and will include spoken exchanges of information, email exchanges, and sending documents between the lab assistant and mentor.  The lab assistant will work independently, but in close coordination with other Schuerger lab personnel.

All research data is proprietary in nature until published.  The candidate will not post data, photos, or other embargoed information without consent of the mentor, Dr. A. C. Schuerger, and not before the publication of the peer-reviewed paper.

Work schedule: Monday thru Friday, with periodic work in the evenings and on the weekends, as required, to complete ongoing experiments.  Hours will be 8 hrs/day and 40 hrs/week.  The position is funded by a new NASA grant from Space Biology, and thus, is contingent on the continued annual refunding of the project.
